The History Of Breathe

Breathe has been opened since September 2015, we started out as a little 800 sq ft, 2 room spa. Breathe started out this journey named Breathe Body & Spa. We expanded and eventually renovated just under 2000 sq ft of the building adding another massage room, 2 person foot treatment room, hair salon and yoga studio. We had 4 LMTs, a yoga instructor and hair stylist. But six weeks after the hair salon went it, just before 9am on a Tuesday, our building caught fire. The only person in the building was the hair stylist and her account of what took place, she plugged in a few things like every morning and she heard a pop. The light went out and she walked into the utility closet to flip the breaker back on. But by the time she came out of the breaker room, smoke was barreling in from the room where the light went out. She was able to get  out safe but the spa was gone in a matter of 10 minutes. We had no insurance and had to start again from scratch. We started a Go Fund Me page and we are so thankful the communities support! December 2017, we were able to move into a new location (complete with a sprinkler system!) within 6 weeks of the fire. We were able to house 4 Massage Therapists, 3 Estheticians (1 full Cosmetologist), 3 Yoga Instructors, a Viberational Sound Therapist, Pamper Party Hostess, Reiki Master/Hypnotherapist, and Herbalist in a 3,200 sq ft facility. We had 8 rooms, a living that seats 8 people for foot treatments, waxing/facial room, a wellness room (song bowl & shirodhara share), yoga studio with second floor views of 3rd street, and 4 treatment rooms (2 double as couples massage room.) After all that, our slogan became, “In The Middle of Kaos, just Breathe". Not only is that the name of the building but ironically our business name and situation was a perfect fit. Each year in the new location, we were slowly building the therapists to offer incredible services and classes. We want you to have an experience of your own, for your own heart. This year in 2020, we introduced Couples Facials, Natural Nail Pedicures, a Reiki Master, Hypnotherapist, and Mediumship to our menu for body and mind relief. We were truly blessed to be in the new space and have a safe place to heal.

ALL OF THAT CAME TO AN END MARCH 2020…

Our business plan was put on hold because of another natural disaster, everyone knows and has been impacted by this worldwide, Covid-19. Our 3,200 sq ft facility was way too large for the “new” way of life. We would have had to spend thousands on new plastic sheets in order to only see one client in an hours time. With the new regulations, it would have been impossible to operate at that capacity. For many years, Breathe was able to bring jobs to our community and build an amazing connection with our locals and travelers. We loved that, but it’s now time to focus on our full and true intentions. We’re going underground, we’re going to make sure another natural disaster doesn’t shut us down again. The odds of a business shutting down because of a fire and worldwide illness are extremely slim, our new and final location is a safe, clean, state of the art Private Establishment.

Our Second location is called Happy Acres @ The Bayou Public Assembly Building. I know that’s a mouthful, but that’s what it truly is. The history of this beautiful building is just wonderful! We had to honor this land by putting its name back to Happy Acres. It was a thriving Chiropractor Hospital in the 50’s & 60’s, thanks to Dr. Bryon A. White, the Founder of The Bayou Family Estate and Happy Acres Clinic and Hospital. We had been dreaming about this building for over four years! Dreaming about all the possibilities it could be. Every time we reached out to our local commercial real estate agent, her answer was always the same, “This is PAI Zoned and your business plan does not fit into this zoning.” That business plan was our old LLC that had to close after the Covid Shut Down in 2020. We had a fresh clean slate as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization. Once we got all our ducks in a row, we were taken seriously by a Private Investor and Happy Acres became a Reality! After months of hard work and fine turning our dreams, we were able to present a solid proposal to the county. Happy Acres was home to many over the years; it was a chiropractic clinic, hospital, nursing home, childcare/daycare, school and church. Since it was built to be a safe place of healing and sealed with the fate of PAI Zoning; we are excited for the opportunity to grow this space into just that! We are honoring the history of this amazing property by Holding Space for our Community Members to Learn, Grow & Play! The Past…

History of Happy Acres Clinic and Hospital:

“Byron A. White practiced chiropractic medicine in McMinnville for forty-one years, winning considerable recognition as what was known as a "bloodless surgeon." It was a term that White disliked, preferring "orthopedic and corrective manipulation." Although chiropractic was first used primarily to treat hips and other joints, White advanced its use to soft tissue and the treatment of ulcers, diabetes, and gallbladders. White’s patients came from around the world, the result of word-of-mouth advertising.

After graduating from West State Chiropractic School in Portland in 1920, White opened an office in Yamhill. He moved to McMinnville two years later. Impoverished patients often paid him with apples or potatoes, and at one time he owned five cows that were the result of such compensation. During World War II, White opened a Portland office for patients who did not have the rationed gas to drive to McMinnville. His ten-bed facility, in a former residence, was closed after the war.

White operated a small hospital in McMinnville before establishing Happy Acres Clinic and Hospital on the site of his large colonial home, south of McMinnville. In its heyday, the licensed, twenty-two-bed facility had four full-time chiropractors, thirty-eight employees, an x-ray machine, a lab, a kitchen, a laundry, and surgical facilities.” - to read the Full Article by Elaine Rohse here

What fueled this man to build such an amazing place of healing?

I’m not sure if we will ever know the answer to that question, but one can speculate. Reading his full Bio, I can relate to his drive. I love that his work was so important to him that he shared it with the community in all forms! He was able to help those who could not “afford” his services by way of food and farm animals. He truly ran a Non-Profit Organization, in order to help the community that he served for over 40 years.
